    • History of Zambian coffee

Coffee arrived late in Zambia, introduced by missionaries in the mid-20th century. Unlike neighbouring East African countries, Zambia had little expertise in coffee farming, relying on British colonial knowledge. Early attempts faced challenges—while the country had good elevations, its subtropical climate led to disease and low yields, making export unviable.

To diversify Zambia’s economy beyond copper, the World Bank launched coffee projects in the 1970s, later joined by the UN’s FAO and the United Nations Development Programme. Using Kenya’s grading system as a framework, they provided seedlings and support to smallholders, aiming to establish 600 farmers. The initiative quickly exceeded expectations—by the mid-1980s, smallholder numbers had nearly doubled, and production rose from 70 to almost 400 metric tonnes. In 1985, Zambia secured an ICO export quota of 350 metric tonnes, marking its entry into the global coffee trade.

    • When is the best time to source Zambian coffee?

The best time to source speciality Zambian coffee is in March, just before the harvest begins in May. This is when sourcing decisions are made, and top lots can be secured ahead of time. Speciality shipments typically take place between June and August, so early sourcing ensures access to the freshest and highest-quality coffee before demand peaks.

    • How to import coffee from Zambia

If you're looking to import coffee from Zambia, the best time to start sourcing is March, before the harvest begins in May. Zambia’s speciality lots are typically shipped between June and August, making early sourcing essential to secure the freshest coffee.

To get started, research Zambian coffee suppliers or exporters who align with your needs. Many work with cooperatives or large estates, offering washed coffees known for their smooth, full-bodied profiles with citrus and berry notes. If you're considering direct trade, visiting farms can provide valuable insight into the production process and help build strong supplier relationships.

Logistics are a key part of the process—ensure all necessary certifications, paperwork, and import requirements are in place before finalising agreements, so working with an experienced freight forwarder can help streamline shipping and customs clearance.

    • Does Zambia have good coffee?

Yes, Zambia produces high-quality Arabica coffee with a reputation for its smooth, full-bodied profile, mild acidity, and fruity notes. While not as well known as some of its East African neighbours, Zambian coffee offers a clean, balanced cup, often with citrus and berry flavours.

Most coffee in Zambia is washed (wet-processed), enhancing its clarity and structure. Varietals like SL-28 and Catimor contribute to both flavour and resilience. Thanks to improvements in farming practices and processing, Zambia is gaining recognition as a speciality coffee origin, producing distinctive and complex coffees that stand out on the global market.
