  • History of coffee in Yemen

Coffee was present in Yemen during the 15th century, where it was consumed by Sufi monks to aid in their meditation. Over time, coffee production began to prosper, and by the early 18th century, Yemen provided most of the world’s coffee. The country is considered to be one of the birthplaces of coffee, and this is due to the large export figures it had in the 1700s. While Yemen helped to kickstart global coffee consumption, its influence fell over time. This was because many colonial countries began to smuggle Yemeni coffee beans to other countries, and establish plantations in these territories. While Yemen does not stand as a major global coffee producer today, the heritage of this country’s coffee offers a remarkable beverage. You can find tones of earthiness and fruits, among deeper notes of chocolate. This coffee is considered complex and aromatic, making it perfect for specialty coffee enthusiasts.

  • When is the best time to source Yemeni coffee?

Yemen has one main coffee harvesting period, lasting from around October to March. If you are looking to source this coffee, prepare a few months in advance of the harvest season. This will ensure that you can acquire the best beans for your business. You can typically expect your Yemeni coffee to arrive 2-3 months after the coffee has been harvested.

  • How to buy and import coffee from Yemen

When looking to sourcing your Yemeni coffee, it is best to start with umbrella organisations, along with cooperatives. Spaces such as Amal Yemen can provide an excellent place to begin your acquisition. After taking some time to research cooperatives and specific farms, you can then begin to contact the producers that suit your needs. It can be worth organisation a virtual tour, or visiting a farm in person if possible. A close relationship with Yemeni coffee producers will also grant you insight into their operations. Always make sure that your supplier is up to date on their certifications and paperwork.

  • What makes Yemeni coffee special?

Yemeni coffee is prized for both its longstanding heritage and delicious tasting notes. The mountainous regions from which arabica beans are grown provide a distinct sweetness in its coffee. However, dry weather conditions propose a challenge to the coffee’s growing process. This means that Yemeni coffee can be more expensive compared to other varietals. This also means that the coffee is rarer and valued, further making it a more special origin to brew.
