  • History of coffee in China

Coffee was introduced to Yunnan, China during the late 19th century by French settlers. Throughout the 20th century, coffee saw little popularity as a cash crop. This changed during the 1980s when the government made the decision to support the industry with the help of large companies. Production then boomed, resulting in China now being positioned as a major global supplier of coffee. It ranks first for coffee yield per unit area, which indicates how prominent their production figures have become. Most coffee is grown in the Yunnan region, and crops are mostly arabica varietals. Chinese coffee has a complex nutty yet fruity flavour with a medium acidity. Some tasting notes can involve peanuts, cream, chocolate, and fruit.

  • When is the best time to source Chinese coffee?

Since the Chinese coffee harvest season typically lasts from December to March, it is best to plan your sourcing well ahead of this period. There aren’t too many other harvesting seasons for this origin, but some regions begin their harvests around October. You can expect green coffee shipments to begin around April onwards.
