  • History of coffee in India

Coffee was introduced to India during late 17th century. It was supposedly smuggled from Yemen, then planted in the hills of Karnataka. During the same century, the Dutch helped to spread and cultivate coffee throughout the country. It was then during the mid-19th century that the British helped to bolster Indian coffee production. Early into the 20th century, the India Coffee Board was established. It closely regulated India’s coffee industry. By the 1990s, liberalisation gave Indian coffee farmers much more freedom regarding how they would produce and sell their coffee. Coffee farms are typically quite small in India, averaging around 10ha of land. Coffea crops are usually grown among other crops such as pepper, cardamom, vanilla, and orange trees. Indian coffee offers tasting notes of earthiness, spices (including pepper, cardamom, nutmeg), and tropical fruit. It displays a full, well rounded body with a medium acidity.

  • When is the best time to source Indian coffee?

As the Indian harvest period begins from around November until March, it is best to begin sourcing your coffee well before the harvest. You can expect shipments to arrive from around April onwards.

  • How to buy and import coffee from India

When importing Indian coffee, it helps to check if they are SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) certified. This certification can be a great way to begin your search for the perfect coffee for your business. Upon finding certified Indian coffee producers, you can then begin to dig deeper and discover specific farms. While contacting your Indian coffee farms, it can be worth organising a tour - either virtually or in person. If you are happy with the coffee of your chosen suppliers, you can then begin organising aspect of your purchase such as paper work and logistics. Always ensure that your supplier has all of the correct paperwork in order.

  • Is Indian coffee arabica or robusta?

In the past, coffee leaf rust decimated many Indian coffee farms. This resulted in many farms switching from mainly arabica varietals to either robusta or arabica/liberica varietals. Today, robusta varietals are much more common within the Indian coffee sector, with around 72% of coffea crops being robusta, while the 28% are arabica.
