  • History of Peruvian coffee

Coffee was introduced to Peru by Jesuit missionaries during the mid-18th century. It arrived from Ecuador and a small number of crops were planted near the city of Jauja. Alongside this introduction were techniques and knowledge of agriculture, which further aided in the planting and cultivation of other crops alongside coffee. Its popularity grew going into the 19th century, along with demand. With the help of rail infrastructure projecting during the same century, Peruvian coffee saw a boom due to easier logistical operations. Entering the 20th century, demand for Peruvian coffee lessened slightly due to competition from other countries, political unrest, and environmental issues. This lull during the 20th century has gradually changed by today. Now, Peruvian coffee is celebrated by many coffee enthusiasts, and the country has a solid position as a global supplier. A typical cup of Peruvian coffee is smooth and mellow, with tasting notes including chocolate, nuts, with fruity aromas.

  • When is the best time to source Peruvian coffee?

Peru offers a few different harvest seasons based on the regions from which the coffee is grown. Eastern Peru’s coffee harvest season begins as early as February, going into May, and ending around August. In the lower altitude regions, the harvest begins around March. Some other regions have harvests between April and September. You therefore have a lot of options for choosing when to source your Peruvian coffee. It is best to look at sourcing well before the harvest of your chosen year so that you can forge great relationships with suppliers.

  • How to buy and import coffee form Peru

When buying and importing coffee from Peru, cooperatives are a great place to start looking. Some examples of these cooperatives include FRONTERA, CAPAA, and CECANOR. Many of these will not only provide some excellent coffee, but you can help them support their local communities. Getting in touch with any of these cooperatives will expand your network of Peruvian coffee producers, and then you will be able to make strong relationships with farms of your choosing. Once you have found the best farm or cooperative for you, it is worth organising either a virtual tour, or visit the farm in person if possible. This will allow you to familiarise yourself with the farmers, their green coffee products, and their standard of paperwork and certification.

  • Is Peruvian coffee bitter?

Some lower altitude grown Peruvian coffee may offer more bitter tasting notes. Additionally, this is even more prominent in robusta varietals. However, much of Peru’s coffee is considered to be smooth and slightly acidic.

  • What is the best Peruvian coffee?

Some of the most loved Peruvian coffee among specialty drinkers involves arabica varietals. This is especially true when sourcing coffee from higher altitudes. High altitude Peruvian coffee will offer much more sweetness and subtle flavours. The Peruvian Andes offers some excellent elevations for high quality coffee, and is celebrated worldwide for its flavours.
