  • History of coffee in Uganda

Robusta was found growing wild in Ugandan countryside. During the early 20th century, foreign settlers also introduced arabica to the country and established plantations. This grew over time, leading to a coffee boom throughout the country. It rose to further prominence during the 1970s, stepping in when Brazil’s coffee supplies took a hit due to frost. Until the 90s, farmers were stringently regulated by government regulation, but more freedom was given to farmers following the control shifting to the Coffee Marketing Board. Today, Ugandan coffee has a solid position as a global producer of coffee. Robusta is native. Known for its robusta exports, but also produces popular arabica beans. Around 90% of Ugandan producers work on less than 0.5 ha of land. Coffee tends to be intercropped with other crops such as bananas. Ugandan coffee can be found to have very sweet and fruity tasting notes. You can find flavours including zesty orange, blueberries, and tea, with a woody finish. High quality arabica will be very sweet with a medium to high acidity.

  • When is the best time to source Ugandan coffee?

Uganda offers many different harvest periods. These periods are dependent on what varietal your are looking for, along with the growing region. Central regions have main crop harvests from September-April, with robusta varietals being harvested around May-August. In some regions, you can find harvest periods of arabica in both April-July and October-February. The West Nile regions offers harvests lasting from October-February. There are also fly-crop periods. So you have a lot of options when it comes to planning your sourcing of Ugandan coffee.

  • How to buy and import coffee from Uganda?

When planning your acquisition of Ugandan coffee beans, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority can be a great place to start. This space offers a lot of options to communicate with the country’s coffee farms. After finding the right farm for your business, you can then begin contacting them and organising a tour. This can either be done virtually, or in person if possible. If you are happy with the product, you can then start to make deals. Always make sure that your sellers are certified and able to provide all of the correct paperwork.

  • Which type of Ugandan coffee is the best?

Many specialty coffee enthusiasts would consider Ugandan arabica coffee to be the best. This is because the high altitudes from which it is grown produces sweet flavours that result in a more delicate and complex cup of coffee.

  • What is the status of coffee in Uganda?

Coffee serves as a vital cash crop in Uganda. Around 20% of the country’s population rely on coffee as a source of income. Since liberalisation of the Ugandan coffee industry in the 1990s, producers now have a lot more freedom in how they choose to grow and sell their coffee. Robusta remains as the most cultivated varietal, while arabica varietals are grown at higher altitudes.
