  • History of coffee in Panama

Coffee was introduced to Panama during the 19th century. Plantations initially began near the coast, but over time the farms would find better conditions in the highlands. A lot more attention was made to the Panama coffee industry during the 1990s through the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP). Members of this association disseminated knowledge and ideas on producing high quality coffee over higher yields. It was also around this time that the well-loved Geisha varietal was beginning to see more prominence on Panama’s soil. Overall, Panama is esteemed as a producer of very high quality specialty beans. Prices are more expensive than other origin beans, but this is reflected by its rarity and unique tasting notes. You can find this coffee to taste very light, sweet, and fruity. Its delicate notes can evoke a tea-like beverage, with hints of watermelon, candy, and a smooth finish.

  • When is the best time to source Panama coffee?

Panama’s main coffee harvest period runs from October to February. It also has a late harvest that extends further from February in April. This gives you a bit more leeway when planning your acquisition of these beans. It is best to plan your sourcing a few months in advance of the harvest period. You can then expect your coffee to arrive from 3-4 months of the harvest.

  • How to buy and import coffee from Panama

If you are interested in sourcing some green Panamanian coffee beans, cooperatives and organisations are a great place to begin your search. It is worth looking at the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP). Exploring their website, or contacting them directly can be a great way to expand your network of coffee producers. If you find any farms that appeal to you, don’t hesitate to reach out to them. You can then get to know the farms in more depth through organising a visit, or virtual tour. Always check that your chosen producers have the correct paperwork and certifications for an easier trade.

  • What is special about Panama coffee?

Panama is esteemed as an origin country that produces very high quality coffee beans. There are a few factors contributing to this. The country offers ideal climates in its mountainous regions. This, along with high altitudes, regulates and slows the coffee’s growth, leading to much more sweetness to develop in the bean. Additionally, Panamanian coffee is grown on mineral-rich volcanic soil, providing essential nutrients to aid in growth. Lastly, Panamanian coffee farms cultivate high quality varietals such as Geisha, which further contributes to its reputation as a producer of excellent coffee.

  • Is Panama coffee acidic?

Depending on the region or varietal, some Panamanian coffee can be found to taste acidic. Since arabica is the main varietal cultivated on Panamanian soil, there will usually be a degree of acidity found in these coffees. Due to the ideal growing conditions, this acidity should never be too pronounced. Instead, Panamanian coffee offers a bright citrus-like sharpness.
