  • What are green coffee beans?

Green coffee beans are the seeds of the coffee cherry once the fruit has been removed, dried and milled – the raw material every roaster starts with. They're pale, dense, smell more like hay than coffee, and can't be brewed into anything you'd want to drink until they're roasted. Unroasted coffee beans, raw coffee beans and green coffee beans are three names for the same thing. Every lot here is sold green, so the roast – and the flavour it unlocks – is down to you.

  • How to choose green coffee beans

Start with origin and process, because they shape the cup more than anything else you control. Washed coffees tend to be clean and structured; naturals bring fruit and body; honeys sit in between. Cupping scores help too: our 85–88 coffees are the more distinctive, fruit-led lots, while 81–84 coffees are sweet, balanced and forgiving. Most lots are Arabica, with Robusta and naturally low caffeine species alongside. Our guide to how to buy green coffee beans covers grading, screen size and moisture in more depth.

  • Green coffee beans by origin

East African coffees from Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi are known for florals, berries and bright acidity. Central Americans – Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica – lean towards chocolate, caramel and stone fruit. South America covers sweet, nutty Brazilian naturals, versatile Colombians and clean, high-grown Peruvians. Asia and the Pacific add earthier, heavier-bodied coffees from Indonesia, India and Timor-Leste. Each origin page goes into regions, varieties and how the coffees roast.

  • Buying green coffee for home roasting or for trade

If you're roasting at home, 0.5kg and 1kg bags let you try several coffees without committing – our green coffee for home roasting range and machine-specific picks for Kaffelogic and Aillio Bullet roasters are good places to start. Roasting for a business? 5kg bags bring the per-kilo price down, and approved wholesale accounts unlock 10kg and 20kg pricing across the list. For blend components and everyday volume, see our commercial green coffee.

  • How to store green coffee beans

Green coffee is far more stable than roasted coffee. Kept cool, dry, dark and away from strong smells, most lots hold their quality for up to a year; the enemies are heat, humidity and big temperature swings, which is why the fridge is a bad idea unless the beans are vacuum sealed. Leave them in their original bag or an airtight container, and roast your older stock first. Our green coffee storage guide covers the detail.

Your questions, answered

What are green coffee beans?

Green coffee beans are unroasted coffee – the dried, milled seeds of the coffee cherry, before any heat has been applied. All coffee starts green; roasting is what turns it brown and develops its flavour.

Are green, raw and unroasted coffee beans the same thing?

Yes. Green coffee beans, raw coffee beans and unroasted coffee beans all describe coffee that hasn't been roasted yet. 'Green' is the term the coffee trade uses.

Where can I buy green coffee beans in the UK?

Right here. We stock over 100 green coffees from more than 25 origins in our UK warehouse, from 0.5kg bags up to wholesale volumes, and dispatch within 24 working hours.

Can you brew green coffee beans without roasting them?

Not into anything that tastes like coffee. Unroasted beans are very hard, taste grassy and astringent, and won't grind or extract properly. Everything we sell is meant to be roasted first.

How long do green coffee beans last?

Stored cool, dry and airtight, most green coffee keeps its quality for up to a year. Roasted coffee, by comparison, is best within a few weeks.

How much roasted coffee does 1kg of green coffee make?

Roughly 800–880g. Beans lose about 12–20% of their weight as moisture during roasting, more the darker you go.

Which green coffee beans are best for beginners?

A natural Brazil or washed Colombian is the classic starting point – sweet, forgiving and easy to judge across a range of roast levels. Our staple green coffee beans are chosen for exactly that kind of consistency.

Are your green coffee beans Arabica or Robusta?

Mostly Arabica. We also stock Robusta green coffee beans for blends and espresso, plus rarer species such as Racemosa and Excelsa. The species is listed on every product page.

Do you sell organic green coffee beans?

Some of our lots are certified organic – it's stated on the product page where it applies. Availability changes with the harvest, so the organic selection varies through the year.

Do you deliver green coffee beans to Europe?

Yes. We ship across the UK and Europe from our own warehouse, and prices are shown for your delivery country.

Do you offer samples or trial batches before committing to larger orders?

Yes, we offer samples for most of our coffees. If you need a larger sample than what’s typically available, we recommend trying one of the smaller quantity options listed on our site. That way, you can test the coffee before committing to a larger order.

What sizes or quantities can I order?

All our green coffee beans come in 0.5kg, 1kg and 5kg bags. Approved wholesale accounts can also order 10kg and 20kg at lower per-kilo prices, and for full sacks or anything larger, just get in touch – we'll help you put a custom order together.
