  • History of coffee in Myanmar

Coffee arrived in Myanmar with British colonisers but wasn’t widely cultivated. Catholic missionaries introduced it to the Shan state in the 1930s, where it still thrives today. In the 1980s, international aid projects—particularly UN partnerships—helped coffee take hold as an alternative to poppy farming, which once made Myanmar a major player in the opium trade.

More recently, Myanmar’s coffee industry has shifted towards specialty production, with a growing focus on traceability and quality. While the country’s coffee producers are largely independent of government influence, they continue to face challenges due to Myanmar’s remote landscapes and complex political climate. Despite this, Myanmar’s specialty coffee is earning recognition on the global stage, valued for its distinct flavour profiles and rich history.

  • When is the best time to source Myanmar coffee?

The harvest season for coffee in Myanmar typically runs from December to April, with most specialty lots being processed and ready for export between May and July. This means the best time to source fresh-crop Myanmar coffee is usually from late spring to early summer.

Since Myanmar’s specialty coffee sector is still growing, availability can be limited, and demand often outpaces supply. If you’re looking for specific lots, it’s best to plan ahead and secure coffee early in the post-harvest period to get the best selection.

  • How to buy and import coffee from Myanmar?

To source coffee from Myanmar, start by working with reputable exporters, cooperatives, or importers to ensure quality and traceability. Check import regulations in your country, including food safety standards and tariffs, to avoid any complications. The best time to buy is after the harvest, which runs from December to April, with coffee ready for export between May and July—securing lots early is recommended. Most shipments are sent by sea in jute bags with GrainPro for freshness, though air freight is an option for smaller, urgent orders. If you're new to sourcing, partnering with an experienced green coffee importer can simplify logistics and customs clearance.

  • What is special about coffee from Myanmar?

Myanmar’s coffee industry may be young, but it’s making a big impact. With diverse growing regions and a strong cultural heritage, the country is producing high-quality, distinctive Arabica beans. Investment in better farming practices, improved processing techniques, and farmer training has elevated quality and boosted returns for growers. As a result, Myanmar is quickly becoming a key origin for exceptional specialty coffee.
