    • History of Venezuelan coffee

Coffee was introduced to Venezuela during the 18th century by Spanish colonists. By the 19th century, it became the country’s primary export. Part of its boom was owing to breaking apart from the Spanish Empire in 1821. While export figures were healthy for some time, the country’s thriving coffee industry was then overshadowed by oil during the 20th century. Over time, the coffee sector then began to suffer from less funding, outdated infrastructure, and social unrest.

Regardless of the challenges posed by the overshadowing of oil, Venezuelan coffee still holds an esteemed place as a high quality specialty coffee. The drop in production figures has inspired producers to instead focus on quality. This has also expanded to other players in the industry, and the country is now seeing a dedicated and passionate coffee community on the rise.

Farming is mainly carried out by smallholders, who grow their coffee at altitudes between 800 - 2000 masl. The country offers ideal climates and rich volcanic soil. While Venezuelan may be difficult to procure compared to other countries, it offers a unique and high quality coffee drinking experience.

    • When is the best time to source Venezuelan coffee?

Venezuela’s harvest season begins from around October onwards, so it is best to begin planning your procurement a few months before this date. You can then expect your coffee to be shipped from 1-3 months after the period starts.

    • How to buy and import coffee from Venezuela

When sourcing specialty coffee beans from Venezuela, it is best to begin your research by looking at some of the more recent specialty initiatives and communities operating throughout the country. A great example is Caracas Quiere Cafe, who are passionate about developing the country’s coffee industry. Contacting this community will enable you to connect to the wider coffee industry, enabling you to find the best producers for you needs.

Make sure to take the time to do your research into your options as it will give you the best chance of finding the perfect product for your business.
After researching deeper into your available producers, it is then best to get in touch with them directly. This will enable you to better understand how your prospective producer works. You could then organise a visit, or a virtual tour.
If you are happy with your producer, you can then begin to organise shipments. Always ensure that their paperwork and certifications are correct and up to date.

    • What does Venezuelan coffee taste like?

Venezuelan is renowned for its rich, full bodied flavours and subtle complexity. Its high acidity is balanced by sweet flavours of chocolate, nuts, and caramel.
