    • History of Paraguayan coffee

Coffee was introduced to Paraguay during the 19th century, and the crop began to see production toward the end of this period. For a while, it was grown as a minor crop for the country, but eventually, government and financial support helped to popularise it. It was initially hoped that Paraguay would be able to match Brazil as a world renowned coffee producer. This is because both countries share similar soil conditions and climates. As part of the development plan, commercial plantations were set up and seeds were disseminated throughout the country. Funding from Banco Agricola made these plans possible and implied that Paraguay had some serious potential as a global coffee producer.

While the industry saw some healthy production figures during the mid-20th century onwards, numbers have since dwindled over the last few decades. This has been due to political instability and economic fluctuations affecting the country. It also does not help that beans are difficult to export due to the country being landlocked, along with infrastructure limiting transport options out of the coffee growing regions.
The sector has always remained relatively small compared to other countries, but this has inspired farmers to place much more focus on quality over quantity. Arabica coffee is the dominant crop grown throughout the few smallholder farms, and the coffee farmers take pride in sustainable and organic agricultural practises.

Subtropical climate, warm temperatures, and moderate rainfall offer ideal conditions for coffee growth. This therefore shows promise for Paraguay as a producer of rare and unique coffee over the next few years.

    • When is the best time to source Paraguayan coffee?

Paraguay’s harvest season begins from around April, so it is best to begin planning your procurement a few months before this date. You can then expect your coffee to be shipped from 1-3 months after the period starts.

    • How to import coffee from Paraguay

Sourcing specialty coffee from Paraguay may be a little more challenging due to the variety of factors currently affecting its industry. Since there are not a lot of farms operating throughout the country, it may be difficult to find accessible contact details online. One of the better options is to contact some specialty roasters and coffee shops such as Deux Coffee Roasters. This company is working on developing a specialty coffee industry within Paraguay and should be able to get you in touch with local farmers.

Make sure to take the time to do your research into your options as it will give you the best chance of finding the perfect product for your business.
After researching deeper into your available producers, it is then best to get in touch with them directly. This will enable you to better understand how your prospective producer works. You could then organise a visit, or a virtual tour. If you are happy with your producer, you can then begin to organise shipments. Always ensure that their paperwork and certifications are correct and up to date.

    • What does coffee from Paraguay coffee taste like?

Paraguayan coffee can offer a rare and exceptional cup with medium body and acidity. It displays typical traits of subtropical terroir, with flavours such as chocolate, nuts, and caramel.
