    • History of Dominican coffee

Coffee was introduced to the Dominican Republic around 1715 by French colonists. It became a very popular crop for many of the small scale farmers who, over time, worked on developing and establishing the industry over the century. It was then during the 1870s that the country then began exporting its coffee. Figures were high throughout the 20th century, but have gradually dwindled. While the country holds a solid position as one of the medium to smaller global producers, its export figures remain low. This is because around 80% of the coffee its produces is consumed domestically.
Today, coffee continues to serve as an important product for the Dominican economy and a lot of pride is taken to produce high quality arabica beans. This is partially aided by government support. The industry prides itself on sustainable agricultural practises among organic, shade grown environments.
Dominican coffee is mainly grown between 600 - 1,450 masl on smallholder farms, who usually wet process the beans on site. The multitude of microclimates, topography, and ideal growing conditions enables coffee to be grown and picked all year round.

    • When is the best time to source Dominican coffee?

The main harvest period in the Dominican Republic begins around September onwards. However, due to the variety of microclimates located around the Dominican Republic, you should be able to source coffee all year round. If you are opting to source specifically for the September harvest, it is best to start planning a few months before the season begins. Otherwise, the best time to source will entirely be decided by your specific needs, which is made much more convenient by the Dominican all year harvests. You can then expect your coffee to be shipped from 1-3 months after picking.

    • How to import coffee from the Dominican Republic

When sourcing specialty coffee beans from the Dominican Republic, it is best to do some research into the farming cooperatives operating around the country. FEDECARES is a great place to start, as this cooperative will be able to connect to the wider smallholder industry.
Make sure to take the time to do your research into your options as it will give you the best chance of finding the perfect product for your business.
After researching deeper into your available producers, it is then best to get in touch with them directly. This will enable you to better understand how your prospective producer works. You could then organise a visit, or a virtual tour.
If you are happy with your producer, you can then begin to organise shipments. Always ensure that their paperwork and certifications are correct and up to date.

    • What does Dominican coffee taste like?

Due to the varied microclimates found in the Dominican Republic, you can find a variety of different tasting notes depending on the growing region. For example, Barahona is renowned for producing some of the country’s highest quality beans. Barahona beans are known for their rich flavour, heavy body, and high acidity. A cup from this region will offer deep earthy tones and a rich aroma.
In general, coffee from the Dominican Republic's higher altitudes will provide more acidity, while lower altitudes will display a softer body.
Overall, the coffee will taste sweet and delicate, with deep, earthy chocolate notes, finished with slight floral and fruity hints.
