    • History of Haitian coffee

The Haitian coffee industry can trace its origins back to 1715, when French colonists introduced the coffea crop to the island. Then throughout the 18th century, coffee helped to build Haiti’s agricultural sector, and high production figures were recorded by the end of the century. During this time, Haitian coffee production was collectively made with the Dominican Republic as part of ‘Saint-Dominigue’. For a period, the Saint-Dominigue union supplied around half of the global coffee market.
Initially, the coffee farms were worked by slave labour, but this system collapsed following slave revolts in 1791. As result, the coffee industry saw a sharp decline. For the next two centuries, the Haitian coffee sector made attempts at revitalising its production, and in 1949, the country became the world’s third largest coffee producer for a short period. However, following this short boom, Haiti has since seen a drop in its production. It currently faces a legacy of political issues, a dwindling agricultural workforce, and environmental disasters. The sector is mainly organic and mainly consists of small-scale garden farmers, where coffee plants are grown among other crops.

    • When is the best time to source Haitian coffee?

If you are looking to procure specialty coffee beans from Haiti, it is best to begin sourcing a few months before the main harvest season begins in September. This will give you a much better chance of obtaining coffee from the best lots. Haiti offers a very long harvest season that can last until June in some regions, giving you even more freedom in sourcing the right beans for your business. You can then expect your shipments to commence from around a month of the harvest season starting.

    • How to buy and import coffee from Haiti

When sourcing specialty coffee beans from Haiti, it is best to do some research into the coffee associations and cooperatives operating throughout the country. These include the Singing Rooster cooperative, or the Rebo S.A. and Selecto estates. Alternatively, you can also contact the National Institute of Haitian Coffee. Make sure to take the time to do your research into these options as it will give you the best chance of finding the perfect farm for your business.

After researching deeper into your available producers, it is then best to get in touch with them directly. This will enable you to better understand how your prospective producer works. You could then organise a visit, or a virtual tour.
If you are happy with your producer, you can then begin to organise shipments. Always ensure that their paperwork and certifications are correct and up to date.

    • What does Haitian coffee taste like?

You can find Haitian coffee to offer a rich, yet medium body cup with a lower acidity compared to other origins. Tasting notes will offer smooth and deep flavours of nuts, marzipan, and caramel.
