  • History of coffee in Ecuador

Coffee was introduced to Ecuador during the 1860s. Following a development of trade and commerce, coffee soon saw exportation around the world. Ecuador’s diverse regions provided some ideal locations for the cultivation of high quality beans. It gained more popularity during the 1930s when it replaced cocoa as one of the major cash crops. Today, Ecuador ranks fairly low as a coffee producing country, since more focus is placed on other industries such as oil. However, the coffee it does produce is celebrated by specialty enthusiasts. This is especially the case for arabica varietals. While slightly more robusta is cultivated, there is still plenty of arabica grown. You can find Ecuador coffee to taste juicy and sweet, with bursts of fruitiness. The coffee holds a medium acidity, and has a jam-like texture.

  • When is the best time to source Ecuador coffee?

Ecuadorian coffee has only one main harvest, which occurs between May to September. It is best to plan your sourcing far in advance of the the harvest period so that you can guarantee the best beans for your business. Depending on when during the harvest season your coffee has been picked and is ready, you can expect delivery from around 3-4 months.

  • How to buy and import coffee from Ecuador

If you are looking to source some Ecuadorian coffee, cooperatives are an excellent place to start looking. APECAFES are a great example of this. Contacting them can help to expand your network of Ecuadorian coffee producers and exporters. This will enable you to explore direct trade options too. Once you have found the best supplier for your business, you can begin to establish a strong relationship with them. You can then work on organising either a virtual tour, or plan a visit to the coffee farms if possible. If you are happy with your potential supplier, make sure to check they have all of their paperwork and certifications in check.

  • Why is Ecuadorian coffee special?

While Ecuador does not produce as much coffee as other countries, the coffee producers take pride in their work. This is especially the case for arabica varietals. These prized beans are grown at high altitudes in ideal microclimates. The perfect growing conditions and hard work from producers results in a unique origin coffee that is full of sweetness.
