  • History of coffee in Ethiopia

Ethiopia has a longstanding history with coffee that dates back to 9th century legend. It is considered by some to be the birthplace of coffee. People began seriously cultivating the crop during the 1500s, leading to its establishment as a commercial crop over time. By the 19th century, Ethiopian Coffee became a fully-fledged industry and was traded around the world. Today, it is a staple coffee in specialty coffee shops. You can expect sweet, floral, and subtle fruity notes in Ethiopian Coffee, with a clean and bright finish.

  • When is the best time to source Ethiopian coffee?

The harvest season for Ethiopian coffee begins around October and runs through into December and January. It is best to plan sourcing your Ethiopian coffee beans well before the harvest season. After the season has ended, you can expect shipments during the month of March.

  • How to buy and import coffee from Ethiopia

There are a few options when it comes to buying and importing Ethiopian coffee. The Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) acts as the main hub for coffee trading in and out of the country. This can be a great place to start doing your research, and you can opt to trade directly with the ECX for ease of sourcing. Otherwise, you can look into direct trade with smaller farms. If opting for direct trade, you can begin making contact with the ECX, along with coffee cooperatives around the country. After finding the right producer for you, contact them directly. It is worth requesting a virtual tour, or making a visit if possible. Ensure that your producer is reputable and experienced. This will be important for aspects such as certification, paperwork, and logistics.

  • Why is Ethiopian coffee so acidic?

Many factors contribute to the acidity of Ethiopian coffee. One of the primary reasons involves the high altitudes at which this coffee is grown. Higher elevations cause coffee crops to produce more sugars, which acts as a survival mechanism for the crop. These sugars produce much more complexity in the eventual coffee bean, with some of the tasting notes displaying more acidic properties. A lot of Ethiopian coffee is grown from an upward of 1600 masl, meaning that a majority of this coffee can be expected to taste more acidic compared to other origin countries.

  • What is special about Ethiopian coffee?

Arguably, Ethiopia produces some of the best coffee in the world when it comes to specialty origin. Ethiopia’s coffee growing regions are situated perfectly when it comes to climate, soil, and altitude. The culmination of these factors result in an origin coffee that balances sweetness, acidity, and subtle fruity notes. While Ethiopian Coffee can be enjoyed with many brewing methods, it really shines with hand-brewing equipment, such as V60, Aeropress, and Chemex.
