  • History of coffee in Costa Rica

Coffee was introduced to Costa Rica during the late 18th century when it was brought over from Cuba. By the 1820s, the country began exporting some of their harvested coffee around the globe. The industry grew during the 19th century in conjunction with rising export figures. The success of Costa Rica’s coffee industry saw further funding into their economy and infrastructure projects. This saw the creation of railroads and better quality roads, which helped to further streamline their logistical operations. The 20th century saw a decline in Costa Rica’s prominence as a global coffee supplier. Brazil’s influence was overshadowing the Costa Rican coffee industry, and World War II caused main suppliers to cut down on their coffee import figures. Their industry was also hindered by crop blights and price fluctuations. As Costa Rica entered the 21st century, it began to recover its coffee sector, although not at the level it had during the 19th century. Instead, its focus is now much more concerned with producing high quality specialty coffee. Costa Rican coffee is well loved for its dark, stone fruit flavours. The coffee typically has medium acidity, along with a honey-like mouthfeel.

  • When is the best time to source Costa Rican coffee?

Since the Costa Rican harvest usually occurs between October to March, it is best to begin your sourcing well before the season begins. This will ensure that you can guarantee the acquisition of the best beans you can purchase. After buying your Costa Rican coffee, you can expect your delivery to arrive from May onwards.

  • How to buy and import coffee from Costa Rica

If you are looking to buy and import Costa Rican coffee, it is worth researching some of the coffee cooperatives and institutions that function around the country. Examples of these include COOPEAGRI and Icafe (Costa Rican Coffee Institute). Contacting these bodies will enable you to grow your network of Costa Rican coffee producers so that you can find the best supplier. Once you have found a cooperative or farm, you can then begin to contact them and organise a tour either online, or in person. If you are happy with your Costa Rican coffee supplier, get in touch with them to make sure their paperwork and certifications are all in check.

  • What is the best Costa Rican coffee?

While most Costa Rican coffee is esteemed for its high quality, the region of Tarrazú is particularly loved by specialty coffee enthusiasts. This region is situated at a high elevation, which provides optimal conditions for its arabica crops. The coffee found here offers an acidic cup, smooth in body, with sweet and fruity flavours.

  • Why does Costa Rican coffee taste so good?

There are a few reasons as to why Costa Rican coffee tastes so good. Since the decline of its industry during the 20th century, the country prioritised the quality of its coffee over higher export quantities. There was also a ban set in place on the cultivation of robusta varietals. This ban has recently been lifted, but it has allowed arabica varietals to populate the growing regions. Since arabica dominates the Costa Rican growing farms, its coffee will offer sweeter tasting notes.
