    • History of El Salvador coffee

Coffee has shaped El Salvador’s economy since the late 1880s, quickly overtaking indigo as its main export. By the 1970s, the country was the world’s fourth-largest producer, but political instability and a reliance on coffee led to a civil war (1979–1992), causing a steep decline. Post-war land reforms shifted the industry from elite-owned estates to smallholder farms, reshaping production into what it is today.

Despite these challenges, El Salvador remains known for its exceptional coffee. Around 95% is shade-grown, with a strong focus on quality. The country produces a high percentage of Bourbon, valued for its bright, citrusy profile, and is the birthplace of Pacas and Pacamara, prized for their tropical fruit notes and syrupy mouthfeel. While coffee leaf rust poses a threat, continued innovation and support from the Consejo Salvadoreño del Café help Salvadoran coffee maintain its global reputation
