  • History of coffee in Thailand

Coffee was cultivated in Thailand in small amounts during the 19th century. It was initially introduced by King Rama V with the intention of easing economic reliance on rice production. Thai coffee then saw widespread production during the 1970s as part of a national initiative to grow more cash crops in its northern regions. This was to displace the reliance on opium poppies. A few years after this initiative, Thai coffee entered the global market. Today, it holds a solid position as a global coffee producer. This has partially been due to advancements in farming techniques, innovation, and funding. Generally, arabica is grown in northern regions, while robusta is grown in the south. You can expect tasting notes of chocolate and orange blossom in Thai arabica beans. The coffee is generally considered to be well balanced, with a medium acidity.

  • When is the best time to source Thai coffee?

Thai coffee has one main harvesting period, which runs from December to March. It is therefore best to plan your sourcing well before this date. This will ensure that you can guarantee that your suppliers will be able to deliver the best Thai beans for your business. You can then expect your coffee to arrive from around 2-3 months after the harvest has finished.

  • How to buy and import coffee from Thailand

A great place to begin your journey into sourcing Thai coffee will be through the many cooperatives and organisations that operate within the country. These will enable you to expand your network of Thai coffee producers and give you plenty of options. Once you have found the best coffee producer for your business, you can then work on contacting specific farms and organising a tour. If able, you should try and make a visit so you can see first-hand how the coffee is grown and processed. Otherwise, you could organise a virtual tour. If you are happy with your supplier, you can then enquire about correct paperwork and certifications.

  • What is special about coffee from Thailand?

Thailand offers some great microclimates for coffee-growing. The northern highland regions provide excellent soil and climate for arabica cultivation. This is taken further through the hard work and passion of local farmers. They carefully select the ripest cherries during harvest, and employ traditional methods to process the coffee. This all culminates in an excellent cup of coffee that balances smooth chocolate with a mild citrus-like acidity.

  • How to drink coffee from Thailand?

You have a lot of options when it comes to drinking coffee from Thailand. This is mainly due to the fact that the country produces both arabica and robusta beans. While Thai robusta coffee may display more bitter tasting notes, it can be paired really well with sweet beverages and milk. On the other hand, you can experiment a lot more with brewing arabica varietals. Depending on what tasting notes you would like to extract from Thai arabica coffee, you can opt for either lighter or darker roast profiles. Medium to light roasting profiles will bring out its more acidic tones, while a darker roast will result in a deeper, more chocolatey flavour.
