    • History of coffee in Vietnam

The history of coffee in Vietnam began in the mid 1800s when it was introduced to the country by Catholic priests for the sake of a small venture. By the 1900s robusta varietals populated the central highlands. As we go through the 20th century, the Vietnamese coffee industry boomed, taking the world’s stage as the 2nd ranked global producer of coffee. The large coffee producing regions in Vietnam have rich soil and optimal conditions, which provides the Vietnamese coffee industry with plenty of fruitful harvests. This allows the country to supply 40% of the world’s robusta beans. Vietnamese coffee can be found to have a balance of bitter and sweet flavour profiles, with earthy, nutty, and chocolate tasting notes.

    • When is the best time to source Vietnamese coffee?

Vietnam’s coffee harvesting period generally runs between October to April, so it is best to start looking at sourcing from around the month of October. To get the highest quality condition of your beans, try to start sourcing your Vietnamese coffee as early as possible. Some regions have harvests that end around January, which offers some convenience.

    • How to buy and import coffee from Vietnam

As Vietnam is ranked 2nd as a global producer of coffee, you should find no trouble sourcing your beans. The most important thing to bear in mind here is to ensure that your supplier holds excellent standards when it comes to their paperwork, details, and data. You should be confident in your supplier’s knowledge regarding product quality, logistics, and most importantly certification. When thinking about sourcing, you will be able to find most of your starting information on the web, but it may be useful to familiarise yourself with the language and culture as this could set you apart from other buyers.

    • What is special about Vietnamese coffee?

Vietnamese coffee is renowned for its dark flavour profile that balances bitterness with the sweetness of condensed milk. These flavours are due to the fact that coffee from Vietnam is primarily grown from the robusta varietal. This varietal contains nearly twice as much caffeine as arabica, making most Vietnamese coffee a very potent beverage. Coffee from Vietnam is therefore perfect for those looking for an intense caffeine jolt.

    • How to make Vietnamese drip coffee?

A popular brewing method in Vietnam uses the ‘phin’ filter, and this can be an excellent way to brew Vietnamese origin coffee. To make this coffee, you need a phin brewer - a simple piece of equipment that uses fine coffee grounds, water, and gravity. The resulting coffee is strong and intense, so can be best enjoyed with milk or as an iced beverage.
