    • History of Jamaican coffee

Jamaica’s relationship with coffee dates back to the early 18th century. In 1723, King Louis XV of France sent coffee plants to the French colony of Martinique. Just five years later, one of these plants made its way to Jamaica as a gift. The island’s rich volcanic soil and high-altitude terrain proved ideal for coffee cultivation, and production quickly took off. By the mid-19th century, Jamaica had become a key player in the global coffee trade.

However, the abolition of slavery in the late 1800s led to a decline in production. The 20th century saw a shift in focus from volume to quality, culminating in the establishment of the Jamaican Coffee Industry Board (JCIB) in 1950. This body helped set standards and protect the country’s reputation for excellence. In 2018, JCIB merged into the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA), which continues to oversee the industry today.

Jamaican coffee—especially from the Blue Mountain region—is now regarded as one of the world’s finest, known for its smooth, mild profile and exceptional quality.

    • When is the best time to source Jamaican coffee?

The best time to secure specialty Jamaican coffee is a few months before the harvest season begins in August. Sourcing early gives you the best chance to secure top-quality lots that match your preferences. Shipments typically start toward the end of the harvest season, ensuring you receive fresh coffee at its peak.

    • How to buy and import coffee from Jamaica

To source Jamaican coffee, start by researching available farms and lots. Since most production is concentrated in the Blue Mountain region, a good first step is contacting the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA). They can help connect you with local producers.

Once you’ve identified potential farms, reach out directly to learn more about their practices. If possible, arrange a visit or virtual tour to get a clearer picture of their operations.

When you're ready to move forward, begin organising shipments. Ensure that all certifications and paperwork are valid and up to date to avoid any delays in the import process.

    • What does Jamaican coffee taste like?

Jamaican coffee benefits from an ideal growing environment, with rich volcanic soil and high-altitude farms shaping its flavour profile. The result is a smooth, creamy sweetness balanced by bright acidity. Expect a mild, well-rounded cup with delicate floral, nutty, and herbal notes, making it one of the most refined coffees in the world.

    • Why is Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee so expensive?

Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is grown in a challenging, high-altitude environment, where the steep terrain makes harvesting labour-intensive. Strict quality control and limited production further add to its exclusivity. With global demand far exceeding supply, these factors combine to make it one of the most expensive coffees in the world.
