  • What is the history of Vietnamese coffee?

Vietnamese coffee traces its origins back to the mid-1800s when it was introduced by French colonists. By the early 1900s, robusta coffee varietals had taken root in the country’s Central Highlands, laying the foundation for what would become a global coffee powerhouse.

A pivotal moment in the history of Vietnamese coffee came with the economic reforms of 1987, which opened the country to international trade. These changes propelled Vietnam onto the world coffee stage, transforming it into the second-largest coffee producer globally. Today, Vietnam supplies approximately 40% of the world’s robusta beans, making it a cornerstone of the global coffee industry.

  • What is special about Vietnamese coffee?

Vietnamese coffee stands out for its robust flavor and high caffeine content. Over 90% of Vietnam’s coffee production comes from robusta beans, making the country the largest producer of this variety. Robusta coffee has nearly twice the caffeine content of arabica, resulting in a bold, nutty flavor and a deep, rich mouthfeel that is perfect for espresso.

What truly sets Vietnamese coffee apart is its unique preparation style. Often paired with sweetened condensed milk, the result is a signature flavor profile that perfectly balances bitterness with sweetness. This combination creates an intense, dark coffee experience that’s perfect anyone seeking a strong caffeine boost.

  • Where is Vietnamese Robusta coffee grown?

Vietnam’s robusta coffee thrives in the Central Highlands, specifically in regions like Lam Dong, Dak Nong, Dak Lak, Gia Lai, and Kon Tum. These areas provide the perfect growing conditions, with a warm tropical climate influenced by the South Asian monsoon and distinct rainy and dry seasons. The region’s rich soils and ideal weather contribute to the high-quality robusta beans that make Vietnamese coffee a global favourite.
