What does a coffee refractometer measure, and why does it matter?

The R1 Extract measures total dissolved solids (TDS) - the percentage of coffee material extracted into your brew. Combined with your brew recipe and final volume, this gives you an extraction yield reading. It’s the most accurate way to assess whether your coffee is under- or over-extracted and fine-tune your process accordingly.

How does the R1 Extract support brewing consistency?

By taking the guesswork out of flavour. Once you’ve found a recipe that works, you can repeat the same TDS and yield figures with each brew. For cafés and pros, that means consistency across baristas and batches. For home brewers, it means clarity and control with every cup.

Is it complicated to use?

Not at all. Place a few drops of brewed coffee in the sample well, and the device gives an instant TDS reading. The companion DiFluid app guides you through extraction targets (including Golden Cup standards), stores your results, and lets you export or share data as needed. Just make sure your coffee is at room temperature before testing for best results

Great! These guys sell green beans in small enough quantities to be useful for the home roaster (me, my frying pan). Also I love their approach to the local grower communities. I like to keep my consumables supply chains as short as possible; with GCC I feel very close to the growers and local processors. Plus the coffee is fantastic!

I am a coffee roaster, I started looking for green coffee. The best option in price, shipping and variety of quality beans and it always supplies me on time all the time I have been working with Green Coffee Collective

Frequent Questions

Is this easy to use if I’ve never used a refractometer before?

Yes – it’s designed to be simple and intuitive. Just add a few drops of brewed coffee to the sensor and the R1 gives you a TDS reading instantly. The app helps guide you through what the numbers mean, so you’re never left guessing.

What kind of coffee can I test?

The R1 Extract is designed for brewed coffee, not espresso or ground samples. Filter brews, immersion methods, and batch brews all work well.

How long does the battery last?

It’s got a 30-day battery life under typical use, and charges quickly using a USB-C cable.

Is it waterproof?

It’s IP67 rated – so it's resistant to splashes, dust, and the general wear and tear of a working bar or brew bench. Just avoid fully submerging it in water.

What does the app actually do?

The DiFluid app helps you make sense of the numbers. It shows ideal extraction targets, helps you track your brews, and makes it easy to spot trends or tweak your recipes. You can also save and export data - handy whether you're sharing with a team or just keeping tabs on your own brews.
