    • History of Laotian coffee

Coffee was introduced to Laos by French colonists at the beginning of the 20th century. Coffea crops were initially grown in the northern regions. However, it was eventually discovered that the south-situated Bolaven Plateau was an ideal location for coffee cultivation due to its mineral-rich volcanic soil. Coffee saw a some promise as a cash crop for the country, yet production took a serious hit throughout WWI and WWII, as many of the settled French plantation owners had to abandon their farms. The industry then saw a brief resurgence during the 1950s, but this was short lived due to crop disease and the ongoing effects of war.

It was only until 1975 that production saw some substantial results, establishing Laos as solid global coffee producer. This is especially the case over the last few decades as higher prices and increased governmental support are encouraging farmers to cultivate higher yields. Arabica farming has been a particular focus in recent years, yet for now it only constitutes around 25% of Laotian coffee. The rest is predominantly robusta, along with some sporadic liberica farms.

Most of Laos’ coffee is grown upon the Bolaven Plateau. This region offers ideal conditions for growing coffee with altitudes reaching 1,300 masl, plenty of rainfall, cool climate, and volcanic soil.

    • When is the best time to source Laotian coffee?

When it comes to sourcing Laotian coffee, you have some options depending on whether you are looking to procure arabica or robusta varietals. The arabica harvesting season starts from around October, while robusta harvesting begins from around December. Regardless of what coffee you are looking for, you will want to start planning a few months before either harvest season. You can then expect shipments to commence within 1-3 months of the harvest commencement date.

    • How to buy and import coffee form Laos?

When sourcing specialty coffee beans from Laos, it is best to do some research into some of the coffee associations operating throughout the country. The Lao Coffee Board (LCB) and Coneril National Du Cafe Lao (CNCL) are great places to start contacting as they will be able to direct you to specific farms or cooperatives. If you are looking specifically for arabica varietals, farms situated on the Bolaven Plateau will be your best option. It is also worth noting that Laotian robusta varietals are also highly esteemed due to the high elevations from which they are typically grown.
Make sure to take the time to do your research into these options as it will give you the best chance of finding the perfect product for your business.
After researching deeper into your available producers, it is then best to get in touch with them directly. This will enable you to better understand how your prospective producer works. You could then organise a visit, or a virtual tour.
If you are happy with your producer, you can then begin to organise shipments. Always ensure that their paperwork and certifications are correct and up to date.

    • What does Laos coffee taste like?

Laotian coffee typically offers a cup of low acidity and a mild body. The vegetal tasting notes are complimented by subtle sugary, walnut flavours. These characteristics all combine to produce a more tea-like coffee beverage, with ending notes of cacao and tobacco.
