Grown in the mountains of western Letefoho, Rotutu coffee is cultivated under natural shade trees using organic, time-honoured farming methods. Coffee has been a part of Timor-Leste’s history since Portuguese colonisation, but years of political upheaval left the industry neglected. Now, as the country rebuilds, its farmers are restoring their coffee forests and refining their craft to produce exceptional speciality coffee.

The Rotutu producer group has been at the forefront of this revival, selectively harvesting only the ripest cherries and continually improving quality. With support from our sourcing partners, Karst Organics, they have access to both central processing and a parchment purchasing model that allows them to honour traditional methods. This coffee is a testament to their dedication, and by choosing it, you’re supporting a new generation of Timorese farmers shaping the future of their industry.

Name Rotutu Cooperative
Year Started 2018
Location Western Letefoho See on a map

Rotutu, in western Letefoho, is home to a dedicated group of producers committed to improving quality and expanding market access for East Timorese coffee. Since 2017, they have worked to refine their harvesting and processing practices, ensuring their coffee meets the highest standards.

To support this, our sourcing partners, Karst Organics, helped establish the Rotutu processing facility in 2019. Alongside this, a cherry purchasing model was introduced, guaranteeing prices that average 30% above the local commercial rate. While price alone doesn’t determine quality, this incentive has encouraged meticulous harvesting, with farmers carefully selecting only the ripest red cherries. The expertise of the facility’s team, combined with the producers’ dedication, has led to continuous improvements in cup quality.

As the coffee sector in Letefoho develops, so do the opportunities for Rotutu’s producers. Since the 2023 harvest, some farmers have chosen to process their own coffee, selling parchment instead of cherries. This shift reflects their pride in traditional methods and ensures their work is properly valued. With additional support, including processing materials and regular visits from field manager Simao Pedro de Deus, they maintain consistency and quality across all coffees.

Through our partnership with Karst Organics, we’re able to offer coffee from Rotutu that reflects the care, skill, and dedication of the producers behind it.

Karst Organics

Countries of operation Timor-Leste
Established date 2017

Karst Organics is a relationship-driven green bean exporter and importer, dedicated to bridging the gap between the coffee farmers of Timor-Leste and specialty roasters. We spend half the year in Timor-Leste, including the entire harvest season in the mountains of Letefoho, working closely with our partner farmers across 144 households. This deep investment of time allows us to truly understand their communities, language, culture, and expectations, fostering transparency and stronger partnerships.

Our direct collaboration with producers within their coffee forests and households has naturally built a foundation of mutual trust and respect. Together, we navigate challenges and respond to needs as they arise, offering support wherever it’s needed. This includes direct investments in farm-level infrastructure, specialized training in processing specialty coffee, and hands-on assistance during critical harvest times—whether it’s lifting, carrying, picking, sorting, pulping, washing, or drying coffee.
