Producer Information

Lead Farmer: Carlos de Deus
Working Together Since: 2020
Number of Farmers: 32

2023 marks the fourth year of our collaboration with the Hatuhei group, nestled in the remote southeastern region of Letefoho. Accessible only during the dry season, Hatuhei faces isolation during the wet months, limiting income opportunities beyond the coffee harvest.

Despite these challenges, Hatuhei has earned a reputation for producing high-quality specialty coffee. With our support, the group has grown, inviting more community members to join and share in the benefits of specialty coffee processing.

Carlos, alongside Simao Pedro de Deus, our field manager and lead farmer of the Eratoi group, provides weekly support to ensure quality throughout the harvest season. Only the ripest cherries are selected, reflecting our commitment to sweetness and quality.

To maintain exacting standards, we've invested in additional processing equipment, including traditional pulping machines. Carlos also leads efforts to rehabilitate farms, maximizing yields and empowering farmers for increased earning potential.

Roasting Recommendation

Karst and Letefoho coffees are dense with high moisture, resembling East African varieties. Start with high heat to remove moisture quickly and prevent prolonged color change. Maintain steady energy, especially during the first crack, as these beans have an aggressive crack and can drop rapidly. Despite this, they offer bright acidity and premium quality, allowing for extended development for a deep sweetness.
