Cupping Notes

This coffee presents a vibrant and clean profile with crisp acidity. The cup opens with sweet notes of milk chocolate and black cherry, complemented by a bright red grape juiciness. As the coffee cools, delicate undertones of marshmallow and a smooth, tea-like body emerge, reminiscent of black tea. The fruitiness deepens with hints of red apple and apricot, balanced by a subtle sweetness of caramel. The overall experience is fresh and well-rounded, leaving a balanced finish.

Name Juan Diego de La Cerda
Year Started 1980
Location Palencia, Guatemala See on a map

Juan Diego de La Cerda is one of Guatemala’s most esteemed coffee producers, recognized for his commitment to excellence and innovation at Finca El Socorro. As the fourth generation of his family to manage the farm, Juan Diego builds on a legacy that dates back to the early 1900s. His journey into coffee production began under the guidance of his father, Juan de la Cerda Colom, who started cultivating coffee in 1980.

Juan Diego’s relentless pursuit of quality has set him apart in the coffee world. His meticulous approach to farming and processing has earned him top honors, including first-place wins in the prestigious Cup of Excellence in both 2007 and 2020, and second place in 2021. His dedication to experimentation has led him to work with a wide range of coffee varieties, such as Java, Red and Yellow Bourbon, Yellow Caturra, Maracaturra, Pacamara, Purpuracea, and Geisha. Notably, the Maracaturra variety, a hybrid of Maragogipe and Caturra, was planted at the farm as part of an innovative experiment to combat leaf rust.

Under his stewardship, Finca El Socorro has become known not only for its award-winning coffees but also for its sustainable practices. The farm's eco-friendly wet mill and commitment to preserving the natural environment—60% of the farm is covered in forest—are reflections of Juan Diego’s forward-thinking approach.

With a strong focus on quality control, innovation, and sustainability, Juan Diego continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in Guatemalan coffee, producing some of the most exceptional and sought-after coffees in the region.

Established date 2018

Caribbean Goods was founded with a clear vision: to make coffee farming in Guatemala fair and sustainable for the hardworking farmers who dedicate their lives to producing exceptional coffee. The company’s founder, Javier Gutiérrez Abril, has deep roots in Guatemala, having grown up in Guatemala City and even attending school with some of the farmers Caribbean Goods partners with today.

Javier’s early experiences shaped his passion for social justice and education. Growing up surrounded by poverty, violence, and limited opportunities, he was driven to create change. Through volunteering with organizations like Techo para mi País and Soñar Despierto, and supporting orphaned children at Casa Bernabé, Javier found his purpose in making the world a better place. His belief that education is key to a brighter future has fueled his activism and dedication to building a more sustainable, equitable world.

After earning a degree in Engineering from the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, Javier pursued further education in Scotland, obtaining a degree in Finance from Strathclyde University in 2017. It was there that Caribbean Goods was born, a company driven by his mission to contribute to a greener planet and uplift the communities at the heart of Guatemalan coffee production.
