  • What makes Guatemalan coffee so distinctive?

The exceptional taste of Guatemalan coffee is the result of a perfect combination of natural factors, including climate, altitude, soil, and the unique coffee varietals cultivated across the country. Guatemala’s diverse network of microclimates plays a pivotal role in shaping the flavor profiles of its coffees, with each region offering something unique to the cup.
One of the standout features of Guatemalan coffee is its mineral-rich volcanic soil. This fertile ground allows coffee cherries to ripen more slowly, which develops their complexity and depth of flavor. The result is a coffee that’s vibrant, nuanced, and full of character.
Among the varietals commonly grown in Guatemala are Caturra, Catimor, and Catuai, each contributing its own subtle characteristics to the nation’s diverse coffee offerings.

  • Where is coffee grown in Guatemala?

San Marcos. The region's high rainfall, abundant rainfall, and fertile volcanic soils contribute to the coffee's pronounced acidity, good body, and delicate floral notes.
Acatenango. Coffee here is grown at high altitudes on the steep slopes of Acatenango volcano. The coffee has a balanced body, marked acidity, and a clean, lingering finish.
Atitlan. This volcanic region's microclimate is ideal for growing coffee because of the rich soil, surrounding volcanoes, and daily winds that stir the cold lake waters. It is characterised by a full body and pronounced acidity.
Coban. This region is located in a humid, subtropical forest. Expect a full body with pronounced citrus acidity.
Huehuetenango. This is a remote, hilly coffee-growing region in northern Guatemala. The region's climate, soil, and elevation diversity lead to a wide range of flavors in the coffee beans. These beans have a full body, intense acidity, and wine-like notes.
Fraijanes. The region's high altitude, volcanic soil, and regular volcanic activity contribute to the coffee's complex flavors. This coffee has a full body and fresh and intense acidity.
Antigua. Rich soils, ample rain and sun, and relatively consistent temperatures contribute to this coffee's rich aroma, high sweetness, and elegant character.

  • Our relationship with Guatemalan coffee producers.

At the heart of our relationship with Guatemalan coffee producers is a commitment to fairness, sustainability, and empowerment. We are proud to partner with Caribbean Goods, a company founded by Javier Gutiérrez Abril with the mission to create a better future for the farmers who dedicate their lives to cultivating Guatemala’s exceptional coffee.
Javier’s deep connection to Guatemala, where he grew up in Guatemala City, has shaped his passion for social justice and his drive to support local communities. Many of the farmers Caribbean Goods collaborates with are individuals Javier has known since his school days, fostering a partnership rooted in trust and shared purpose.
Through our partnership with Caribbean Goods, we ensure that Guatemalan coffee producers receive fair compensation, access to resources, and the opportunity to thrive. Together, we celebrate the unique heritage of Guatemalan coffee while contributing to a brighter and more sustainable future for the people and the planet.
