Name Felix Marín
Year Started 1960
Location Alto Yurinaqui, Perene, Chanchamayo See on a map

Felix Marín and his family—his wife, two daughters, and son—are the heart and soul behind Coopchebi, an agricultural cooperative nestled in the Inka forests of Chanchamayo. Their story is one of resilience, passion, and a deep commitment to their land and community. Since the 1960s, the Marín family has been devoted to the art of coffee cultivation, with Felix making history as Peru’s first exporter of organic and fair-trade coffee, a milestone he achieved by courageously challenging and changing export laws.

Their farm, located in the breathtaking region of Alto Yurinaqui on Geisha Mountain, spans 11 hectares dedicated to cultivating the exquisite Geisha variety. Despite the challenges of lower productivity—just 552 kilos per hectare—the Marín family remains unwavering in their commitment to quality. Each year, their meticulous work results in around 88 exportable 69kg bags of coffee, a true labor of love.

At Coopchebi, where Felix and his family exclusively deliver their coffee, the Black Honey process is applied with the utmost care. This cooperative, which now includes 149 members, stands as a testament to their dedication not only to exceptional coffee but also to the environment. Coopchebi is deeply committed to forest conservation and environmental sustainability, reflecting the Marín family’s respect for the land that sustains them.

Felix’s influence extends far beyond his own farm. As the president of the National CAFE platform, he has fought tirelessly for coffee growers across Peru, securing access to credit at an incredibly low annual rate of 3.5%. His leadership has also driven community development initiatives in health, education, and emergency services, further uplifting the lives of those around him.

In October 2022, Khipu had the privilege of meeting Felix at Ficafe, Peru’s Annual Coffee Conference. Captivated by the extraordinary quality of the Marín family’s coffees, we visited them in Villa Rica, toured their cooperative’s washing station, and cupped their remarkable offerings, including this one. The experience was nothing short of inspiring—a testament to the Marín family’s
