French Press Coffee Brewing

Green Coffee Beans for French Press

Unroasted green coffee for French press and other immersion brewers. With no paper filter, oils and fine particles stay in the cup, so these lots are chosen for body, sweetness and roundness rather than delicate clarity – naturals and honeys from Brazil, Rwanda and Uganda, alongside washed Colombians and earthy Indonesians. Buy from 0.5kg with samples on most lots – and for the heaviest, most syrupy cups, see our Indonesian green coffee beans. Looking for roasted coffee? These are raw beans you roast yourself – here's how to start.

  • What makes a coffee good for French press

A metal mesh filter lets oils through, giving a heavier, textured cup. That suits coffees with natural body and sweetness – naturals, honeys and wet-hulled Indonesians – and can make very bright, delicate coffees taste muddled. Our French press buyer's guide covers selection in more depth.

  • Roasting for French press

Medium is the usual target: enough development for chocolate and caramel sweetness and a rounder body, without the bitterness that long immersion brings out in darker roasts. Use a coarse, even grind when brewing so fines don't over-extract.

  • French press vs other immersion methods

Aeropress and cold brew are also immersion methods but behave differently – Aeropress adds pressure and a paper filter for a cleaner cup, cold brew drops the heat entirely. For a lighter filter cup, see pour over.

Your questions, answered

What are the best green coffee beans for French press?

Full-bodied, sweet lots – natural Brazils, Rwandan and Ugandan naturals, honeys, and earthy Indonesian coffees.

What roast suits French press?

Medium usually works best. Light roasts can taste thin and sour in immersion; very dark roasts turn bitter with a long steep.

Can I use fruity coffees in a French press?

Yes – fruity naturals work well and taste jammy. Bright, delicate washed coffees lose some clarity.

Why does my French press coffee taste muddy?

Usually a grind that's too fine or uneven. Use a coarse, consistent grind and decant once brewed so it doesn't keep extracting.

Do you offer samples or trial batches before committing to larger orders?

Yes, we offer samples for most of our coffees. If you need a larger sample than what’s typically available, we recommend trying one of the smaller quantity options listed on our site. That way, you can test the coffee before committing to a larger order.

What sizes or quantities can I order?

We offer coffee starting from as little as 0.5kg (1 lb) all the way up to full sacks. If you’re looking for larger quantities than what’s listed on our site, just get in touch! We’d be happy to help you organise and place a custom order. We're here to make sure you get exactly what you need.
