Coffee Roasters for Green Beans

It depends on how much you roast and how often. For personal use or experimentation, a smaller roaster like the Kaffelogic Nano 7 (40g–120g batches) is a good fit. For small business use or larger production needs, the Aillio Bullet R1 V2 (up to 1kg) gives you the capacity to roast efficiently while still accommodating smaller test batches. A useful rule of thumb: divide your weekly coffee consumption by 4 to find a sensible batch size.

The main difference lies in how they heat and move the coffee beans:

Drum Roasters:

• Coffee beans are heated through conduction (contact with the hot drum) and convection (hot air circulation).
• Beans rotate inside the drum, creating even heat distribution.
• Suited for larger batches and more traditional roasting styles.
• Example: Aillio Bullet, which offers excellent control over temperature, time, and airflow.

Air Roasters:

• Beans are suspended and roasted using hot air, ensuring consistent and even roasting.
• Typically smaller in size, more portable, and produce less smoke.
• Example: Kaffelogic Nano 7, perfect for smaller batches and experimentation.

If you’re after a clean, consistent roast with less maintenance, an air roaster is a great choice. For those wanting a more hands-on, traditional experience, a drum roaster is ideal.

Yes, most small coffee roasters are designed for indoor use, but ventilation is key:

• Air Roasters: Machines like the Kaffelogic Nano 7 produce minimal smoke, making them ideal for kitchens or small spaces with a window or light ventilation.
• Drum Roasters: Models like the Aillio Bullet may generate more smoke, especially at darker roast levels. Using them in a well-ventilated area, such as a garage or near an open window, is recommended.

Many roasters also come with built-in smoke suppression systems or exhaust attachments to make indoor roasting easier.

Starting with a quality roaster covers most of your needs, but a few extras can enhance your roasting experience:

1. Cooling System: Some roasters have built-in cooling trays, but if not, you’ll need a way to cool the beans quickly to preserve their flavor.
2. Ventilation Tools: For larger roasters, an exhaust or duct system may help manage smoke.
3. Coffee Grinder: Once roasted, you’ll need a grinder to prepare your coffee for brewing.
4. Storage Solutions: Airtight containers to store roasted beans and preserve freshness.
5. Roasting Tools: Digital scales and thermometers can be useful for monitoring consistency.
