Description

Proper cupping bowls without the proper-cupping-bowl price. Twelve stackable, unbreakable bowls built for tasting coffee side by side. We sourced these because cupping kit shouldn’t cost more than the coffee you’re tasting.

Why use cupping bowls at all?
You can cup out of mugs, and most of us started that way. The problem is that mugs are all different. Different volumes mean different ratios, and different shapes and materials mean the cups cool at different rates. When one cup tastes brighter than the next, you can’t tell if it’s the coffee or the mug. Twelve identical bowls take that variable out, so the only thing changing between cups is the coffee. That matters whether you’re comparing roast profiles, dialling in a new green, or checking a sample before you commit to a sack.

Why plastic?

  • Doesn’t steal heat. At 37g each, these weigh a fraction of a ceramic bowl, so less heat goes into warming the bowl and more stays in the brew through the break and the first slurps.
  • Doesn’t break. Drop one on the floor, or chuck the stack in a bag for a cupping at a mate’s roastery. They survive.
  • Stacks neatly. The fins nest the bowls into one compact stack and let them drain and air-dry after washing.
  • Matched volume. [Include only if the fill test passes] We checked: every bowl holds the same amount, so your ratios hold across the whole table.
  • Affordable. About [£X] per bowl, a fraction of what you’d pay for ceramic or the big-name plastic sets.

Where ceramic still wins
If you’re Q grading or calibrating to a formal protocol, use the glass or ceramic vessels it specifies. For roast development, sample roasting, buying decisions and home cupping, these do the job properly for much less money.

6 or 12 bowls?

It depends on how many coffees you want on the table at once. Most cuppers pour 2–3 cups of each coffee, so if one cup has a defect, you’ll spot it as the odd one out instead of judging the whole coffee on a bad cup.

6 bowls: for comparing two or three coffees

  • Two coffees with three cups each. This is ideal for putting this week’s roast next to last week’s, or testing one green at two roast levels.
  • Three coffees with two cups each, for a quick check across a few samples.
  • Best for: home roasters dialling in a profile, or anyone cupping for the first time.

12 bowls: for a full cupping table

  • Four coffees with three cups each. That’s enough to cup a full roast batch, compare several origins, or line up samples before you commit to a sack of green.
  • Room for more than one person to cup together without running out of bowls.
  • Best for: small roasteries, sample roasting, QC, and cupping sessions with friends or staff.

Not sure? Start with 12. You’ll fill the table faster than you think.

Frequent Questions

Will plastic affect the taste of my coffee?

No. Polypropylene is inert, so it doesn’t add flavour or smell to hot water. Give the bowls a rinse with hot water before you use them for the first time, and wash them with unscented washing-up liquid so nothing is left on the surface.

Can I pour water just off the boil into them?

Yes. The bowls are made from food-grade PP, which is rated for use with hot liquids. Water at normal cupping temperature, around 93–96°C, won’t warp them or leach anything into the coffee.

How much coffee do I use per bowl?

About 11g of coarsely ground coffee per bowl, filled to the brim with water. That’s the standard cupping ratio scaled to a 200ml bowl. Use the same dose in every bowl so your comparisons are fair.

Can I use these for Q grading or SCA cupping?

Formal protocols specify glass or ceramic vessels, so for official grading or calibration sessions, use those. For roast development, sample roasting, buying decisions and home cupping, these do the job properly at a fraction of the price.

Are they dishwasher safe?

Yes, top rack is best. Stack them upside down after washing and the fins let them drain and air-dry. Coffee can mark white plastic over time, but a soak in a coffee equipment cleaner like Cafiza brings them back.
