In the picturesque village of A Lel Chaung, 180 households unite to produce a coffee that reflects the rich character of their land. Situated in a region with a warm, dry climate during harvest, the area is perfectly suited for natural processing. This community focuses exclusively on crafting exceptional dry naturals, utilising the unique terroir and their collective expertise to create a truly standout coffee.

The journey of this coffee begins with ripe cherries, carefully handpicked and delivered to a central collection point in the village. Villagers meticulously sort the harvest, ensuring only the finest cherries are selected, while under- and overripe fruit is removed. The cherries are then spread out to dry on raised beds for around 17 days under the region's consistent dry heat, a process that enhances their natural sweetness and concentrates their vibrant flavours. Finally, the dried cherries are milled locally to preserve their full character.

This careful attention to detail results in a coffee that bursts with juicy red berries and redcurrant, balanced by the tropical sweetness of dried pineapple and the rich warmth of brown sugar. Layers of vanilla and caramel emerge, adding depth and smoothness to the cup. The bright acidity and rounded body are a direct reflection of the community's dedication and the meticulous processing methods that bring out the distinct terroir of A Lel Chaung.

Name Shwe Taung Thu Farmers Group
Location Ywangan, Southern Shan State See on a map

The Shwe Taung Thu farmers group, meaning ‘Golden Farmer,’ is a remarkable collective of Danu and Pa-O smallholder farmers dedicated to producing specialty coffee in the Ywangan area of southern Shan State, Myanmar. This group is more than just a community of coffee growers—it’s a beacon of hope and empowerment for its members. Through strong leadership, financial support, technical assistance, and market connections, Shwe Taung Thu is driving positive change, bringing fairer trade conditions and a brighter future for these hardworking farmers.

The A Lel Chaung coffee is a testament to the commitment and collaboration of 180 member households from the village where it’s grown. Each community within the group forms its own working team, meticulously managing the coffee processing to ensure the highest quality. Their dedication to producing dry naturals reflects a deep understanding of their environment—the dry, intense heat during harvest season in southern Shan State creates the perfect conditions for this process. The result is a coffee that not only embodies the unique terroir of the region but also the spirit and resilience of the people who produce it.

Meet your sourcing partner

Indochina

Established date 2015

Living in Bangkok in 2015, we were first introduced to specialty coffees from Thailand and surrounding countries. The skill and dedication of the coffee growing communities, processors and exporters we were fortunate to spend time with back then made a lasting impression. On our return to London, the rarity of Asian origins in the specialty coffee scene spurred us into creating Indochina Coffee, as a way to promote the breadth of high quality coffees from across this region.

The bitter truth is that almost all of the wealth derived from the coffee industry continues to bypass the indigenous communities who actually grow it. Responsibly traded specialty coffee has the potential to change this and genuinely improve the lives of coffee farmers and their families. We are committed to working with like-minded partners who share this vision for a fairer future.

Since our inception, we’ve focused on developing long term mutually respectful and beneficial relationships, working with the same producer and export partners since our first coffees landed in the UK in 2017. As we’ve expanded the origins we source from, Christian and Shirani continue to work on a personal level with every origin partners, with regular time spent at coffee farms and processing facilities during the harvest season, to fully appreciate and understand the context in which they are operating in.
