  • What type of coffee is grown in the Philippines?

The Philippines is a unique coffee-producing country, one of the few in the world capable of growing all four main commercially-viable coffee species: Robusta, Arabica, Liberica (known as Kapeng Barako in the Philippines), and Excelsa. This diversity is thanks to its rich topography, fertile soil, and microclimates spread across over 7,000 islands.
Robusta accounts for the majority of production, making up about 69% of the country’s output, followed by Arabica at 25%. While much of this coffee is enjoyed domestically, there’s a growing movement among farmers to produce high-quality specialty coffee for the global market. Producers like Kalsada, whose beans we’re proud to offer, are leading the way in showcasing Filipino specialty Arabica coffee to the world.

  • What is the coffee profile of Filipino coffee?

Filipino coffee offers a fascinating range of flavour profiles, reflecting the diversity of the coffee species grown across the country:
Excelsa: Known for its tart and fruity character, Excelsa also carries deep, dark, and rich notes.
Robusta: Earthy and bittersweet, Robusta from the Philippines can surprise with flavors of dark chocolate and subtle floral hints, especially when processed naturally.
Liberica: Bold and intense, Liberica stands out with spicy and aniseed notes. Its sharp aroma, chocolatey undertones, and distinct bitterness make it truly unforgettable.
Arabica: Sweet and fruity with vibrant citrus and stonefruit flavours, Filipino Arabica is particularly captivating when naturally processed, highlighting delicate floral and caramel notes.

  • Where is coffee grown in the Philippines?

Coffee is grown across the Philippines, with each region offering unique flavors influenced by its climate, altitude, and soil.
Cordillera Mountain Range: Encompassing Benguet, Sagada, and Kalinga, this region features rich soils and elevations of 1,000–1,800 meters (3,281–5,906 feet). Benguet and Sagada produce high-quality Arabica with notes of apricot, lemongrass, pomelo, and nuts. Popular Arabica varieties here include Red Bourbon, Yellow Bourbon, Typica, Mondo Novo, and Caturra. Kalinga primarily grows Robusta.
Mindanao: This region includes the Sulu Archipelago, Sultan Kudarat, Bukidnon, and Davao. Mindanao coffee features flavors of nuts, berries, and chocolate, with elevations from 700 to over 1,200 meters. The Sulu Archipelago specializes in Robusta, while other areas grow both Arabica and Robusta.
Visayas Islands: Known for microclimates and varied terrain, the Visayas grow both Robusta and Arabica at altitudes of 500–1,000 meters.
Mimaropa: Comprising Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan, this southwestern region grows Excelsa and Robusta at elevations of 300–500 meters.

  • How do we source Filipino coffee?

We are proud to source our Filipino coffee through Indochina Coffee, a trusted partner deeply committed to promoting high-quality coffees from Asia. Indochina’s journey began in 2015, inspired by the remarkable skill and dedication of coffee-growing communities in Thailand and neighboring countries. Since their establishment, they’ve worked tirelessly to showcase the exceptional coffees of the region while fostering long-term, respectful relationships with producers.
Indochina shares our belief in the transformative power of responsibly traded specialty coffee. They are dedicated to ensuring that the benefits of the coffee industry reach the indigenous communities who grow it. By working closely with producers and exporters during harvest seasons, they gain a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities within each coffee origin. This hands-on approach ensures the coffees we source are not only exceptional in quality but also ethically traded, contributing to a fairer and more sustainable future for coffee farmers and their families.
Through our partnership with Indochina, we bring you Filipino coffees that tell a story of craftsmanship, heritage, and sustainability—delivering a unique cup that supports the people behind it.
