Kondadkan Estate was opened by the Crawford brothers in 1890, the same year as its neighbour Gungegiri, and it still grows coffee today at around 1,200 metres in Chikmagalur, Karnataka. Chikmagalur is described as India's coffee birthplace and research heartland, and its high Malnad slopes, forest shade, acidic lateritic-red soils and sharply varied rainfall all shape the Arabica grown there. This lot is produced by Hamsini Appadurai.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eTwo varieties with very different stories go into it, listed to the best of the grower's knowledge. Selection 9 is a hybrid Arabica selection that pairs the cup quality of the Ethiopian Tafarikela variety with the disease resistance of Híbrido de Timor, while Selection 3 is India's most widely planted Arabica, developed in the 1940s by crossing Kent with a Mysore selection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe processing is where this lot really comes into its own. It is washed and dual fermented: ripe cherry is sorted by hand and with a density float as it arrives, then depulped and put through two separate fermentations, with 34 hours of fermentation recorded.
