aragash-gelcha-natural
Aragash Gelcha Natural

Aragash Gelcha farms five hectares in Halo Shashemene village, in the Gedeb district of the Gedio zone, a part of southern Ethiopia known for producing some of the best coffees in Yirgacheffe. Her land supports much more than coffee: alongside it she grows enset (false banana) and fruit trees, feeding a family of twelve children, six daughters and six sons. Since 2018, when Ethiopia's exporting rules changed to let smallholders export their own coffee, Aragash has held an export licence of her own. She and her family produce an average of 800 kg of green coffee per hectare, and in the off-season the whole family works together on the farm's agronomy.

This lot is a natural, processed entirely at the family's farm. Aragash and her family hand-pick the cherries and lay them out on raised African drying beds, where they dry for 15 to 18 days. The cherries are turned regularly so they dry evenly, and covered at night and whenever it rains. The dried coffee then goes to the Gedeb dry mill for hulling and the removal of defects and debris, and on to Dunkem for further milling, where it is destoned, screened and run through a gravity and colour sorter. The exporter for this shipment is Mecota Trading.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0725/3006/7755/files/0-1_25efe82a-de6b-4baf-a7c6-525d844e48ff.jpg?v=1790588175
