martha-alvir-red-catuai-natural
Martha Alvir Red Catuai Natural

Martha and Ana Alvir fled Nicaragua during the 1977 civil war and built new lives abroad - but they never let go of home. In 2013, their father passed down two family farms, Bethania and Hortensias, and everything changed. What could have stayed a quiet inheritance became the reason the sisters return to Nicaragua every year: to reconnect with family, grow their own coffee, and build something better for the growers around them.

At the time, Finca Bethania was planted almost entirely with Catimor, chosen for yield over quality. Martha and Ana had other ideas. They gradually replanted the farm with varieties like Catuai, Parainema, Maracaturra, Gesha and Java - a long-term bet on quality over volume that's now paying off across the 50 hectares of agroforestry that make up the working farm (alongside a 10-hectare forest reserve they've protected).

This lot is Red Catuai, grown between 1,200-1,500 masl and processed as a natural: picked, floated, fermented anaerobically for 48 hours, then dried slowly on raised beds for 3–4 weeks. Catuai itself has a good pedigree - bred in Brazil in the 1950s from Caturra and Mundo Novo, both descended from Bourbon, giving it Bourbon's character in a more compact, field-friendly plant.

It comes from Nueva Segovia, a region that punches well above its weight: it produces just 10% of Nicaragua's coffee (against Jinotega's 50% and Matagalpa's 30%), but that smaller scale means more attention per tree - and it shows. In 2026, Nueva Segovia producers took the top seven places in the Cup of Excellence Washed category and 17 of the top 20 in Natural/Honey. This is shade-grown coffee in the truest sense, farmed under native trees in one of Nicaragua's most biodiverse growing regions.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0725/3006/7755/files/0-2_74fdd4ec-06b8-4eb7-a5e7-472deb4074ca.jpg?v=1787304233
