• History of Raw Material

Raw Material was founded to make the coffee industry fairer and more sustainable for producers. The organisation began its work in Colombia, partnering with smallholder communities to improve quality and consistency at a community level - enabling stable, year-round access to better markets.

In Timor-Leste, Raw Material supported producers to rebuild their coffee economy after decades of conflict. Within one season, they helped export over 90% of production at prices 2–3 times the national average. This model of low-cost, community-led improvement now guides their work across all sourcing regions.

Today, Raw Material operates in Colombia, Timor-Leste, Burundi, Rwanda, and Mexico. In each context, they adapt their approach to fit local needs, with a focus on maximising value for producers through systems that are practical, inclusive, and built to last.

        • Raw Material core values

Raw Material exists to maximise the value returned to coffee producers. Every decision is shaped by impact - economic, social, and environmental - with a focus on the communities that need it most.

They prioritise economic impact first, improving incomes and stability for producers through better systems, pricing, and market access. Social impact follows, with investments in training, community-led quality control, and shifting power dynamics - especially by creating more opportunities for women and younger generations. Environmental impact is the third pillar, supporting sustainable practices that fit the local context and are viable in the long term.

Rather than searching for the ‘best’ coffee, Raw Material works with the right communities to build the systems needed to produce high-quality lots consistently. The aim is not just quality in the cup, but sustained, community-led change across every part of the value chain.

        • How do Raw Material buy and import their coffee from Colombia, Burundi, Rwanda, Timor-Leste, Mexico?

Raw Material connects roasters with coffee from Colombia, Timor-Leste, Burundi, Rwanda, and Mexico. Each supply chain is built to be stable, transparent, and tailored to local realities. Coffees are available in a range of volumes, from community lots to more exclusive selections, and are priced to reflect both quality and the true cost of production.

All coffees are sourced with a focus on maximising value for producers. This includes consistent pricing, long-term relationships, and systems that reward quality through second and third payments.

For roasters, this means access to coffee that delivers both quality in the cup and positive impact at origin.

          Your questions, answered

          Where does Raw Material work?

Raw Material works in Colombia, Timor-Leste, Burundi, Rwanda, and Mexico. Each origin has a tailored approach, based on where they can deliver the greatest impact.

          How are producers paid?

Raw Material pays consistent, transparent prices that reflect the cost of production. In many cases, producers receive second and third payments based on quality, with systems in place to ensure traceability and accuracy.

What kind of coffees are available?

Coffees range from community lots to more exclusive selections. Quality is built at origin through training, infrastructure, and community-led quality control systems.

Are these coffees organic or certified?

In some origins, like Mexico, many producers use low-input, organic farming practices. Certification varies by region, and Raw Material’s focus is on building sustainable systems that work in practice, regardless of labels.

How does Raw Material ensure impact is actually delivered?

Impact is measured using a theory-based evaluation model, which looks at outcomes across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. This includes comparing results with credible counterfactuals to understand what’s working, where, and why.

What makes this sourcing model different from others?

Raw Material doesn’t chase ‘the best’ coffees. They work in places where the need is highest and help communities build the systems to consistently produce high-quality coffee - with the value staying closer to the farm.
