Its origins are just as intriguing: it's strongly associated with Huila, particularly around Acevedo and Pitalito, but no one has produced a definitive account of where it came from. Genetic testing has only added more questions rather than answers: Sucafina has cited World Coffee Research findings pointing to a close relationship with Ethiopian landrace material, while Colombia's own Cenicafé found 80–97% genetic similarity to a progeny component of Castillo in 2025 testing.
